Tri-Union Seafoods has issued a voluntary recall of several canned tuna products due to a manufacturing defect that could lead to contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that causes botulism. The recall affects products sold under the Genova, Van Camp's, H-E-B, and Trader Joe's labels at major grocery chains including Walmart, Trader Joe's, Kroger, and Costco. The defect involves the "easy open" pull tab on the can lids, which may compromise the seal and allow contamination.
The recall impacts 7-ounce cans of Genova-labeled products sold at Costco in Florida and Georgia, as well as 5-ounce cans sold at Harris Teeter, Publix, H-E-B, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and independent retailers in several states including Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Texas. Van Camp's labeled products were sold at Walmart and independent retailers in Pennsylvania, Florida, and New Jersey.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products. Botulism is a serious illness that can cause symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness, and paralysis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms occur.
Consumers are advised to return the recalled products to the retailer for a full refund or contact Tri-Union Seafoods for a retrieval kit and coupon. For more information, customers can contact Tri-Union Seafoods at 833-374-0171 or via email at support@thaiunionhelp.zendesk.com.
